12 More Banks Join Blockchain Consortium R3 - 

Twelve more banks have joined the distributed ledger consortium led by startup R3CEV. New entrants to the group include Banco Santander, Danske Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, Natixis, Nomura, Northern Trust, OP Financial Group, Scotiabank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, US Bank, Westpac Bank and the Bank of Montreal.

IBM Creates Open-Source Blockchain With Linux and Big Banks - 

IBM has launched an open-source blockchain project along with financial incumbents including JP Morgan and Wells Fargo. The Open Ledger Project is described as a tool that will allow businesses to build custom distributed ledger solutions, without needing to rely on open, public blockchains.

DBS, Standard Chartered Develop Distributed Ledger for Trade Finance - 

Singapore's DBS Bank has reportedly partnered with Standard Chartered to create a distributed ledger for trade finance. Bloomberg reports company officials at both firms stated yesterday that they have completed initial testing for the idea.

Japan's SBI Sumishin Net Bank has announced it will develop a proof-of-concept to explore blockchain banking. For the project, SBI Sumishin will work with noted domestic think tank Nomura Research Institute and blockchain startup Dragonfly Fintech Pte.

Microsoft Adds New Blockchain Services to Software Sandbox - 

Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform is adding additional options to its blockchain-as-a-service sandbox. Eris Industries, Factom and CoinPrism (OpenChain) have all partnered with the tech giant on the initiative, according to a 15th December blog post.

SEC Approves Overstock's Plan to Issue Blockchain Securities - 

The SEC has approved Overstock's plans to issue stock via the blockchain through its subsidiary tØ platform, according to a report. It is still unclear when the company will issue its first public security on a distributed ledger but Overstock's CEO said it was on its list of "high priorities".
