PoW, PoS, and now, PoET.

Far from the creation of a wunderkind polymath, the newest alternative to bitcoin's proof-of-work has a backer you already know.

One of Intel's contributions to the Hyperledger blockchain project, PoET is proving a rare beast in that it's winning cross-aisle consideration (even if not all the final verdicts are positive).

It's a neat way to involve Intel's existing business model in the blockchain craze, but PoET seems well-placed to play a role in the future of private blockchains. Is it the end-all-be-all? We don't know, but so far it's proving itself an interesting missing link. (Read the full story).

· Blockchain and IP. The US Commerce Department is hosting an event in Silicon Valley on Friday that will include discussion on how blockchain tech could be applied to digital copyright. Read more.

· Central bank research. Japan’s central bank is testing blockchain tech in payment and settlement systems. It isn’t planning on applying the tech, preferring to focus on research at this stage. Read more.

· First step. The Illinois Blockchain Initiative is setting the stage for government blockchain implementation, while staying away from the prospect of legislation. Read more.

· Careful, now. What does the IRS subpoena mean for Coinbase clients? If you declared your bitcoin profits, nothing. If not, you may have a problem. Read more.

· Reducto bitcoin barriers. A unique subculture is sprouting up around a proposed improvement to the bitcoin protocol. Warning, you'll need your wands for this one. Read more.

· On board. Smart contracts startup Symbiont is beefing up its team even further with the hire of cryptographer Lisa Yin. This follows the incorporation of former SEC commissioner Dan Gallagher and former T. Rowe Price Global Investment Services CEO Todd Ruppert. Read more.
