Dubai Government Taps IBM for City-Wide Blockchain Pilot Push


The city of Dubai is getting closer to becoming the world's first blockchain-powered government.

In conversation with CoinDesk, Zeina El Kaissi – head of business development at Smart Dubai – detailed the city's plans for migration of official processes to blockchain systems.

Although the self-imposed deadline is not until 2020, El Kaissi is confident that some blockchain pilots will be operational as early as next year.

To this end, Smart Dubai has named IBM as its "blockchain strategic partner", while ethereum startup ConsenSys will be its blockchain city advisor.

Although the complexity of the project is daunting, the high level of technical expertise, combined with strong government support and relatively thin bureaucracy, could be enough to fast-track implementation.
