Auto-brewery syndrome (also called gut fermentation syndrome) is a very rare medical condition that, at first glance, sounds rather novel, but is a nightmare for patients afflicted with it. The syndrome results in normal levels of carbohydrates and sugar consumed leading to alcoholic intoxication as a particular yeast strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in the patient’s gut efficiently converts the two into ethanol.
